Sandbox is a new bakery in Bernal heights, specializing in fresh baked pastries
and single drip coffee from Ritual coffee and De La Paz coffee.
 
Sandbox was originally intended to be a kids cafe where parents and kids could have fun
playing while eating. As the bakery was built, the kitchen took most of the space. We still have
some kid friendly items, such as mini sandwiches, housemade fruit, etc., and a chalkboard
wall to draw on. The offerings are petite, just the right size for little hands and healthy adults.
 
Sandbox is owned by pastry chef Mutsumi Takehara. Mutsumi trained at the bakery, La Farine
in Oakland for 3 years and learned all her classic French pastries at Chez Panisse. Later
she moved to San Francisco, where she became the pastry chef at the fine dining restaurant,
Rubicon. Then she spent the last 10 years as the pastry chef at Slanted Door restaurant.
 
Everything is made in small batches and baked fresh daily.
 
And now Mutsumi, mother of two happy boys, has opened her own bakery where
she uses the best quality, local and organic ingredients possible.
 
We hope to make good memories at the Sandbox.
